Biography Of Bhupen Hazarika

Bhupen Hazarika, Who Made His Mark All Over The World, Was Born In Sadiya In Tinsukia District Of Assam. His Father’s Name Was Neelkant, Who Was Originally From Nazira Town Of Sivasagar District Of Assam. And His Mother’s Name Was Shantipriya.

Bhupen’s Childhood Was Spent In Guwa Hati. The Eldest Of Ten Children Was Hazarika, Who Was Very Interested In Music Since Childhood.

It Is Said That His Attachment To Music Was Due To His Mother, Seeing His Mother Inspired Him To Sing.



Bhupen Hazarika Completed His Early Education From Sonaram High School And Matriculation Examination From Tezpur At The Age Of About 13. For Further Studies, He Came To Guwahati, Where Bhupen Completed His Intermediate In Art In The Year 1942.

After This, He Did His MA From Banaras Hindu University. He Later Went Abroad For High-Level Studies, Where He Received His PhD Degree From Columbia University In New York.

Bhupen Hazarika’s Career

As Mentioned Above, Bhupen Hazarika Was Inspired To Sing By Seeing His Mother, So He Also Started Getting Fond Of Music. He Started Singing In Assamese Language At The Age Of Only 10.

The Famous Filmmaker Of That Time Jyotiprasad Agarwal Heard His Voice And He Was Very Pleased With Hazarika’s Voice. In 1936, Bhupen Recorded His First Song In Kolkata.

He Sang Two Songs In Jyotiprasad’s Film ‘Indramalati‘, And Since Then He Has Never Looked Back. He Wrote His First Song At The Age Of Just 13, Since He Had Mastered His Art, So His Journey To Become A Singer, Composer And Lyricist Began.

After Completing His Studies, Bhupen Hazarika Started Singing In All India Radio In Guwahati. He Had Knowledge Of Many Languages, So He Used To Translate His Village Into Another Language And Sing.

Gradually He Started Becoming Popular Including The Whole Of Guwahati And Made Singing His Profession In His Music World.


Financial Constraints And Marriage

Bhupen Hazarika’s Life Was Still Going Well, Then He Went To Columbia University To Get His High-Level Education, Where He Met Priyam Patel, And Gradually Their Relationship Deepened And They Got Married In The Year 1950. In 1952, He Had A Son, Tej Hazarika.

After Returning To India From Abroad, There Was A Rift Between Hazarika And His Wife, And Due To Financial Constraints, Bhupen Hazarika Took Up The Job Of A Teacher But For A Long Time He Could Not Do The Job Of A Teacher And Resigned.

Due To Financial Constraints, His Wife Also Left Him. Then Bhupen Hazarika Returned To Music And Sang Many Great And Superhit Songs.

He Lent His Voice To The Song In Superhit Films Like Mil Gayi Manzil MujheSaajDarmianGajgaminiDaman And Kyun. He Was Awarded The National Award In 1975 For His Amazing Contribution In The Field Of Music.

He Was Awarded The Asom Ratna In 2009 And The Padma Bhushan In 2011. Bhupen Hazarika, Who Made A Name For Himself In The Music World, Died On November 5, 2011 At The Age Of 85.
